TRINQUET ANTI-AIRCRAFT SHELTER
The Route of Memory
One of the most interesting vestiges of the violence of the war are the air raid shelters. This is the most important of those built in the municipality. In the case of Xàtiva, few shelters were constructed, given its geographical characteristics and urban formation, which allowed for the use of natural spaces as shelters, as well as the adaptation of private basements in the houses themselves. However, documentation remains that speaks of the construction process of these spaces, of which this is the only surviving example.
The Sant Jordi – Trinquet shelter has a longitudinal structure with a larger final space. Currently, with modern modifications to the urbanization of this area, the first section, the entrance, which should have been located 10 or 15 meters further north, is no longer preserved.
It is an 80-meter-long tunnel, excavated into the rock, with a slight upward slope towards the interior. This tunnel, which had electric lighting, some of the wiring anchors of which still remain, ends in a cylindrical space five meters in diameter and over 11 meters in height. It is unknown when the upper dome collapsed, which was slightly below the exterior surface. The final room has a long bench fitted to the circular floor where the sheltered individuals could rest.
