In the prison of the judicial district of Xàtiva, the citizens of Xàtiva who defended the cause of the legitimate government of the Republic were punished. It was a building constructed in the 18th century as a veterans’ barracks. In the 19th century, it became the prison of the district until it was demolished in the second half of the 20th century to build the city’s outpatient clinic, now converted into a specialty center.

The Xàtiva district prison was one of the main stages of the repression suffered by those who defended the Republic. Some survived and were eventually released over the years, although the scars of repression accompanied them for the rest of their lives. An example of this was the imprisonment of José Aragonés Saborit, a sculptor by profession, married to Patrocinio Camús, and one of the political leaders of the municipal scene during the Republic. After the war, Aragonés was sentenced to death, a sentence that was ultimately commuted to imprisonment, although the psychological torture he endured in the Xàtiva prison traumatized him until his death.
