The former convent of San Agust\u00edn was the building chosen during the government of the Republic to house the Municipal Council. Here was located the headquarters of the last legitimate government of the Republic, as well as the municipal court.<\/span><\/p>\n

The old City Hall was also the scene of the first tensions and confrontations of the Spanish Civil War in X\u00e0tiva when, upon news of the military insurrection, the Strike Committee assumed control of local power, establishing itself in the council chamber and implementing a series of measures aimed at quelling any fascist support.<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the decisions made by the Committee was the disarmament of the military forces, so that all available weaponry in the city was controlled by said Committee. Additionally, there was the spontaneous emergence of urban militias, armed and equipped with vehicles and other requisitioned instruments for the containment of the uprising. This situation led the city to a state of tension, fear, and increasing intimidation.<\/span><\/p>\n
